Why do we always desire what we don't have?!! We are always looking for or running after something, why? I have been asking myself this a lot lately
. Its really so obvious (although not much people see it), those with less wealth want more money, and those with money desire more power, those in the east are fascinated by the west and vice versa, those with fair skin would like to get tanned and those with darker skin dream of having a fair skin!! Why do so many people leave their homes or countries, regardless of how developed or rich is that country? Or why do so many people like to collect rare things??
It just seems to me that we are all looking and searching for "something", yet, when we reach this or that "thing"
it seems its not enough, or may be we find its not really what we needed, then we start dreaming of something else
and it keeps going again and again and again
. Till
. We die or perhaps get depressed
. And even though, the cure for that depression would be finding "something" to run after, some motivation, something to live for
..aye
is it really that?! That we always need something to live for? That, lets say, without these mirages we run after, there is no reason for us to live?! There is no meaning for our presence?! What a pathetic life, of course if that was true!
Or is it some sort of natural process? Like some driving force in this life, something to keep life going. Like these natural forces that keep everything moving; wind, earth layers, waves, ocean tides
etc. could this also be some kind of natural force that force us to interact, so that life on earth keeps changing
and maybe heading to a certain point or fate
could be!
Or maybe it is just happiness that we are searching for. Maybe this lost happiness is the reason why we always want things, specially those we don't have or those that are hard to get, thinking that this or that is going to give us the happiness we are looking for. But when we reach there and find it didnt really matter much, and we are still unhappy, then we start looking for a different thing. But are we really unhappy?? Well, I guess we have our happy moments, but "Happiness" is really something different. And it is really an ironic thing, think about it like this, if you are happy, really happy with what you are and what you have, why do you want to change it? Why do you want more, why do you have wishes and dreams? If life was perfect, who would dare to dream?!! And, dream of what?!!
Or may be all of that is true, like everything else in the universe, a perfect web of reasons that fit together in an amazing harmony. Unlike our perfection which is usually based on a single reason or concept
.a defective perfection!! Meaning, when some aspect of something or an idea is perfect, the others are surely defective. Even when it comes to science, our perspective is usually deficient and short sighted, specially in those branches that try to explain the universe, like those theories of modern physics, the relativity, the string theory and the realm of quantum physics
. Each of these sciences is concerned with a certain aspect of the universe, and most of them can explain it perfectly, but when we put them all together, they just don't fit, they can even contradict. On the other hand, the universal or divine perfection is just "universal"
everything fits together, everything can have more than one reason, or even all the reasons, everything can be explained in more than a way.
But, where and what is happiness? Are we ever going to find it?!

Devious Comments
I think part of it all is that it might be the process of getting to that goal that gives people happiness, like the satisfaction of getting one step closer to the goal. They might think that it's the big picture they're after, but it's really the little leaps and bounds they make that give them happiness, like working out a kink in something or finding a tricky piece of a jigsaw puzzle. After they achieve what they set out to do then there really isn't anything else to do, so they can't get the good feeling when they're overcoming hurdles to get to what they want. So they move on to something that will give them that feeling.
Like with collections. Once you've finished a collection, what next? Start a new one, make it an adventure like the first time. People who invent something might stay focused on something they invent for the rest of their lives because they can focus on improving it. It's movement; they're doing something that they can see and touch and work with and it makes them feel accomplished.
Sometimes it seems like we are never satisfied, and it may be for different reasons like greed or pride or whatever, but it might also be for that feeling that they're doing something the see as productive or fulfilling etc. They can't find happiness in stagnation, they find it through movement and improvement and changes that they make.
But those are just my thoughts, and I figured I'd just throw them out there

well, i surely agree about what u said that its all part of getting this satisfaction out of achieving something or getting closer to a goal... so in the end as u said the goal they are after is not really what brings happiness, but the process of achieving... i guess both your opinion and mine are just 2 faces of the same coin, i was talking about our need of having a goal to run after, and u was talking about achievment, and both are intimately related, to reach your goal you must achieve and u can not achieve without having a goal . but i guess your explanation is more clear, and i totally agree with it, thank you once more
and although i had other explanations in what i wrote, but this one is really what i believe, but i said those other things coz this is just my way, i like to explore all possible options and am very much into philosophical and argumentative discussions
my next topic is going to be about happiness, its nature and what makes us happy! , so if u are interested i would be glad to share my thoughts and hear any ideas u have perhaps u can strat by what makes you happy and what does happiness mean for you ??
And I'll be happy to share my thoughts on happiness with you, but it'll have to wait a bit...I have a lot going on at the moment as far as school and stuff go

Well, simple things in life can make my day turn around completely; little things like a hug from a friend or finding a five-dollar bill on the sidewalk, or having a good meal, can make it go from lousy to really nice ^^
What really makes me happy pretty much follows the ideas I had when I commented on your journal the first time; having a goal--and more importantly, watching myself progress--makes me especially happy. But I also love to make others happy, too, namely my friends. Their smiles make my day brighter ^-^. And, having a puppy that practically does backflips when I come home from school also tends to make me happy. xD
As for what makes others happy, I can only speculate. I think that people are in general really complex, so simple things might make them happy because it's a break from busyness, a break from having to put thought into something and wonder why, and just appreciate it whether it be a favorite meal or something. Or, people's lives might be pretty simple, and so they find solace in less simple things, like elaborate models.
Some people for whatever reason aren't satisfied with anything, least of all happy, and I'm not entirely sure why that is.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, what makes people happy depends solely on the individual.

well i agree with all what u said, so many simple things can make us happy, its not money, power or fame... its usually not the goals that we are trying to achieve... that was the point that i have been thinking about, this paradox that we live in. like we agreed when we were discussing my previous journal, that we always need a goal and to feel that we are achieving something, and that something in most cases is a material goal... a job, some possession, fame, fortune... etc etc... and non of that can make us happy, and when we achieve this or that goal, we can get a temporary feeling of satisfaction, then soon enough we discover that we are still not that happy like we've immagined when we were dreaming about it... then of course we start looking for something else. doesn't happiness make a better goal?!! i definitly think it does, but the problem is that we usually don't know what really make us happy... and what is happiness exactly.
the reason why i raised this subject of happiness is becasue i think its very much related to the previous topic, its just the next ring in the chain! it seems so logic to me that happiness should be the ultimate goal of any sane human being... i mean whats the point of anything else if you are miserable, u won't be able to enjoy your money or power or whatever it is... but still we (and i don't exclude myslef) are all looking for other things.... here i am having this discussion with you while i have just been working for almost 14 hours!! i know very well that working that hard and being a succesful person won't make me that happy, but i just can't help it!! .... why do you think we are that eager for such material goals?? is it some natural instinct? some complicated form of the primitve survival instinct that all creatures have..? i really don't know for sure. of course, i am not saying that we must abandon work and pursuit happiness for the rest of our lives.... i am talking here about eagerness and persistance for success or any of the other things i mentioned before.... these things should be a way for living and providing our main needs in sustaining our living, not a goal for life.
how great one would feel after helping someone who really needed help, when you see the gratitude in the yes of that person, to feel that you really did something useful, then you really feel there is a meaning and reason for your living. or to feel how much you're loved by others and how important you are to them, that your presence really make a difference. how wonderful is it to feel that u made someone happy?!! i liked that exampl u mentioned about your puppy and his backflips
uhh i guess i have been talking too much
i guess thats it for now, i hope u will find something useful in my thoughts
